Real Madrid is demonstrating its solid defence this season. Despite the injuries that have affected the squad, especially in this area of the pitch, Real has managed to maintain its safety in the back. In fact, in the seven La Liga matches played in 2013 the squad has ceded only five goals, making Real Madrid the side that has ceded the fewest goals in the championship since the beginning of the year. Moreover, four of these matches ended in a clean sheet for the Whites.
After 24 fixtures Real is one of the sides that has ceded the fewest goals in La Liga, with a total of 22 ceded goals. Only Malaga has ceded fewer (21), but the Whites have the most effective defence when the seven fixtures played in 2013 are taken into account, having ceded four goals at home and one away. Athletico de Madrid (6) and Betis (7) are next on the list.

The side managed by coach Mourinho kicked off the year against Real Sociedad in a match that the Whites won 4-3 despite being down a man for 85 minutes of the match. After three straight matches against Osasuna, Valencia and Getafe without ceding a goal the Whites lost by a minimum one goal against Granada (1-0) and went on to win the last two fixtures in the Santiago Bernabeu. Real ceded just one goal in their crushing win against Sevilla (4-1) and kept a clean sheet against Rayo (2-0).
